Dear Toastmasters of District 82!

Greetings, and welcome to a new Toastmasters year brimming with fresh ideas, opportunities, aspirations and growth mementom.

The year 2017-2018 has been a phenomenal one, with District 82 being ranked as #1 among the 105 Districts across the world. Kudos to each of you for staying committed to the Toastmasters educational program.

Having achieved the coveted #1 position, we must now use our momentum, confidence, and conviction as a launch pad to scale greater heights. Looking ahead, we will continue to execute our strategic priorities, yet our tactics will evolve in synchronization with the ongoing transformation – both at the organization level as well as at educational level.

1. Strengthen the Core
As Toastmasters, we excel in communicating as well as in planning, organization and execution. I invite each one of you to wear your Toastmasters hat always and see how the skills that we acquire within our clubs can create a larger impact – both in our professional as well as personal lives. Our clubs form the core of the District. Let us continue to practice our speaking and leadership skills at our club, but regularly.

Tony Ribbons says, ““It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.” To help further strengthen our core, the Toastmasters Leadership Institute will be regularly conducting educational programs across the District. I encourage the new members to actively participate in these programs and get to explore the opportunities present in the Toastmasters world. For the existing members, these programs will provide a refreshing approach to our educational curriculum. Our primary focus will be to consistently excel in our club meetings, thus paving way to a stronger core.

2. Embrace Change
As we march forward this year, I urge all of you to get on to the Pathways bandwagon as fast as you can. Pathways Learning experience provides us a flexible and interactive way to build real-world, transferable skills. Launched in May 2018, Pathways has been gaining good response from our new members. Many of you have also achieved competencies in the new program, embracing the change. Throughout the year, we will have online sessions to create more awareness on Pathways, and also to help members transition smoothly to the new program.

3. Expand our Horizons
In line with the District mission, namely, “To build new clubs, and to support existing clubs in achieving excellence”, we will work toward taking the Toastmasters program to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities of Tamilnadu and Sri Lanka. Our founder Dr. Ralph C Smedley said: “While most of us may have entered Toastmasters to learn to make speeches, that benefit is but the beginning of the good which may come to us and the good which we may do for mankind.” As a District, we have the resources to reach out to a larger community and create a positive impact in the lives of many more people.

4. Listen to Members’ Voice
Feedback, they say, is the breakfast of the champions. In District 82, our members – you are the champions. As a rapidly growing District, it is important for us to reflect on the paths that we have walked by, and to see how we can forge ahead in a better manner. Introducing to you “Member’s voice” – a channel through which you can share your feedback and ideas that will help shape a better future for District 82. The feedback/ideas submitted by you will be reviewed on a continual basis, and the action plan and subsequently the results will be published on a monthly basis.

5. Celebrate success
As Human beings, we always tend to celebrate big achievements in life. As Toastmasters let us take out time to celebrate our successes at various levels – it could be completion of a Pathways Level, or adorning the role of a Ah-counter for the first time, or taking part in a speech contest. Each attempt in trying to do something that we have not done before calls for a celebration – as we have moved one step ahead in confidence. Let us continue to celebrate our achievements big or small all through the year, and continue to be grateful to our mentors, and fellow club members who are the wind beneath our wings. Ovation 2019 will witness the celebration of endless dreams that you and I have for ourselves, and for the District.

Even as we take pride in the rich legacy of our District, let us march forward, creating new milestones and scaling greater heights.

Citing my favorite quotation by Jeff Beezos, “Work hard, have fun, make history”, wish you the best to be the destined person you aspire to be!

Best Regards,
Suganthi Periasamy
